Werner Herzog MasterClass Review - Is It Worth It?

Werner Herzog is an award-winning director, writer and producer. He touches every aspect of the cinema and his talents are extraordinary. Werner has started from the bottom and made his way to the top with films like Lessons of Darkness, Grizzly Man, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, etc. Werner is often dubbed as the “the most important filmmaker alive”. Not only filmmaking, his Opera stages have also garnered much praise from the audience. His works often depict the struggles of people in everyday life and how they work towards their dreams. He looks for ordinary stories around him and makes them larger than life. Through MasterClass, Werner intends to do the same, that is, to teach aspiring filmmakers to create a masterpiece with limited means.

What is MasterClass?

At MasterClass, professionals from different fields share their insights with their viewers through a series of pre-recorded videos. These lessons are combined with workbooks as well as various interactive assignments. These assignments are optional to facilitate students coming from different walks of life. Its up to them if they want to do them or not. Having said that, MasterClass still encourages their audience to make the most out of their classes.

All About Werner Herzog's MasterClass

Werner’s course is divided into 26 lessons, with a total of a little over an hour of videos. Werner teaches his students to never compromise over anything while making a film or documentary. He shares his life experiences, including how he stole a camera to make his first movie. Herzog’s teachings are based around his struggles as a filmmaker and how he didn’t back away from his goal even when his financial situations didn’t work in his favor.

Lesson Plan

In his introductory lesson, Werner strikes up a conversation with his pupils and tells them how he taught himself everything from directing to writing and how he has travelled around the world to film his works. Later in his lessons, Werner not only tells his students how to teach yourself the art of storytelling, but he also takes them through a step-by-step process of how to make a film out of nothing. The process involves finance, location, negotiation and many other things. He leaves no aspect of filmmaking unattended.

How to Access MasterClass?

To learn from Werner, you need to buy any one of the two access passes offered by MasterClass. One is for accessing a single class which costs $90, while the other is an all-access pass that costs $180.

Is it Worth it?

If you are skeptical about spending $90 on an online class, then don’t be. Though Werner Herzog is an internationally acclaimed filmmaker, he doesn’t teach you how to make big-budget films and documentaries, rather he brings himself down to your level and starts from the very beginning. The fact that he is a self-made and self-taught filmmaker is what makes this more rewarding, because after all you are also starting from the bottom, so why not learn from the best?
